Jedi Grand Master Yoda

Grand Master, was a title used in both the Old and New Jedi Orders to describe the recognized head of the Order. It was apparently separate from the title of Master of the Order, which was used to denote the leader of the Jedi High Council, rather than the entire Order.

HistoryEdit

Yoda was the last known Grand Master of the Old Jedi Order, holding the title as early as 82 BBY.[1] Luke Skywalker achieved the title after he rebuilt the Order, although he did not formally assume the title until the Swarm War.[2] After Luke was willingly exiled from the Jedi, Kenth Hamner was named acting Grand Master.[3] While the Grand Master was the unquestioned Jedi leader, all known Grand Masters still kept the Jedi High Council as a source of advice. Despite this, the Jedi Council could still override the wishes of the Grand Master if they wanted, as seen when the High Council allowed Anakin Skywalker to be trained as a Jedi against Yoda's advice.

Known Grand MastersEdit

Luke Swarm War

Former Jedi Grand Master Luke Skywalker

  • Yoda (—19 BBY); last Grand Master of the Old Jedi Order
  • Luke Skywalker (36 ABY—43 ABY); founder and former Grand Master of the New Jedi Order
  • Kenth Hamner (43 ABY—); acting Grand Master of the Order following Luke's exile

Behind the scenesEdit

The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia introduced the title 'Master of the Order', used to denote the leader of the Jedi High Council. It is unclear if this title was meant to be another term for the Jedi Grand Master or not.
